ocean radio, (in progress)
poplar, electrical wire, vinyl, handmade hydrophone, neoprene, custom fm transmitter.
ocean radio uses a waterproofed microphone (hydrophone) to live broadcast sounds of the ocean to the airwaves, specifically FM 89.1. The movement of the ocean’s waves carries ocean radio in and out of signal from listening receivers at the shore.
Inspired by Nicole Starosielski’s scholarship on undersea network cables and the relevance of the ocean to global network infrastructure. ocean radio proposes a humble and intimate broadcast in which listeners can have a one-on-one relationship with a signal that comes and goes with the tide.
